About Us

The Studio formed in 2008 to provide the La Crosse Area and outlying communities with an understanding and example of contemporary art. We formed in order to organize a group of like-minded artists, all previously thirsting for creative input and avenue, to establish a contemporary art cornerstone for La Crosse, and to provide and educate the community in contemporary art forms and philosophy. We aim to supplement and aid the education of students working and learning in La Crosse by providing a professional but accessible atmosphere that will help students understand the often mysterious and difficult world of professional art. We hope to give today’s budding artists the opportunities we needed at those stages of our own development.

GBSS is actively involved in the development of the local art communities. We aim to use the existing art establishment—the artists who have learned to support themselves and their art lifestyle, and who have the experience of creating and changing the environment of art-making around them—to provide both a foundation and a shelter to the art progeny of La Crosse; to use the resources of art patronage and art knowledge to foster the community of youthful artists that La Crosse is endlessly conceiving, and ensure that no potential artist is overlooked so that future artists have the opportunity and the fertile environment to become the artistic geniuses of tomorrow. We want to allow those who have the resources to share them with those who need the resources—because the camps are seldom the same—in order to create the strongest, most prolific and astounding art community that we can be.

The Green Bay Street Studio holds regular events to help us communicate and work with our community. We hold a regular Wednesday night figure drawing session, have frequent group and public critiques, and hold workshops that help the public understand the techniques that we use in the studio and help us to foster a creative, vibrant art community.

Facilities

The Green Bay Street Studio is a fully-equipped non-toxic intaglio studio. We offer aquatint, and copper and zinc etching. We utilize edinburg etch and sodium sulphate mordants which significantly reduce health risks associated with intaglio printmaking. We have a 27" x 48" Wright combination press, which can be utilized for intaglio and blockprinting processes.

The studio also offers studio space for painting, drawing and other artforms, with the potential to expand to accomodate larger personal studio space needs for painters and three-dimensional artists.

Our lounge area is ideally-suited for our regular critique sessions and for other studio events, including figure drawing and studio receptions.

GBSS houses a full-featured printmaking studio, with non-toxic acids (Edinburgh etch for copper and sodium sulphate for zinc), aquatint, and a 27" x 48" Wright combination press.

Our Wednesday night figure drawing sessions allow us to provide our community with a weekly avenue of artistic output and a critical opportunity for continued artistic growth. Our figure session draws both artists and models from almost 100 miles around, including Winona and Rochester.

GBSS features a stereo with a 200 CD player and...
